Steven Pihelgas Funeral Held December 12

Funeral services for Steven Pihelgas, 14, who as killed Sunday, December 9 in a tractor accident in Lyle, were held Wednesday, December 12 at our Savior's Lutheran church in Lyle with the Rev. Harold Luecke officiating.

Steven Michkel (sic) Pihelgas, the son of Kaljo and Kathleen (Matter) Pihelgas, was born in St. Paul December 28, 1958.

Capt. William Stanley tribute

The teachers and pupils of Lyle public schools paid tribute to the memory of the late Capt. Wm. Stanley by placing the flag on the school premises at half-mast and contributing flowers for the occasion also by closing the schools on the afternoon of the funeral, while the business men showed tribute by closing their places of business during the funeral hour.

A former Lyle man, E. B. Sherman, 83, of Wibaux, Mont. died March 18 at Golden Valley hospital in Beach, N.D. where he had been a patient from an illness since January 3. Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 22 at Chrisitian Fundmental church in Wibaux, with the Rev. Paul Lemke officiating, and interment was at Wibaux.

Edward Beaman Sherman, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jewett Sherman, was born in Lyle November 26, 1883. He grew up in Lyle and attended Lyle school.

Mrs. Harry Bell Funeral Held At Bethel Alliance

Funeral services for Mrs. Harry Bell, 67 were held Tuesday, May 11 at Bethel Alliance church in Lyle with the Rev. M. H. Averbeck officiating. Interment was in Woodbury cemetery west of Lyle.

Hazel Belle Bell, the daughter of William and Clara DeLaney was born May 13, 1897 in Mitchell county.

She attended the rural school Mitchell county schools and also the Lyle high school.

Recently, we had the privilege of interviewing Dr. Andrew A. Lee, veteran dentist of Lyle. When we arrived for the interview, Dr. Lee was busy enjoying one of his favorite pastimes, reading. We proceeded to visit him before some patient might arrive to ask relief from toothaches. This is what we learned:

The Class A quarter-finals at Williams Arena on Thursday went almost according to Hoyle, which is to say that 3 of the 4 seeds advanced to Friday’s semi-finals at Target Center. Underdogs Menahga and Stephen-Argyle were able to throw a big scare into favorites Minneota and Mountain Iron-Buhl, but only unseeded Sleepy Eye had enough tricks up its sleeve to pull an upset.

There were a variety of different themes expressed in the thousands of green Lyle/Pacelli T-shirts in Target Center Saturday afternoon. One of them was “Unfinished Business.” Well, there’s no more unfinished business for the Athletics and their loyal fans, as they methodically picked apart Sleepy Eye 57-33 in the Class A championship game.

Like the other classes, the Class A tournament will feature a lot of familiar teams and players this year. And, wouldn’t you know, in every one of the 4 1st round matchups, the team that has been in the tournament the most often and the most recently is the one that is seeded and favored.

I'm not certain if there is even a local shoe store left in Sleepy Eye, but if there is you can be sure they carry some mighty fine glass slippers. They may need to stock up on that particular item if their girls basketball team continues its Cinderella story at the state tournament on Saturday. For the second night in a row, Sleepy Eye pulled off a stunning upset to defeat heavily-favored Mountain Iron-Buhl 63-48 in the semifinal game.

Kristi was the star of the Class 1A state tournament, leading the Athletics to their first state championship. She averaged 24 points and 16 rebounds in three games at state, including 24 points and 16 rebounds in Lyle-Pacelli’s 57-33 victory over Sleepy Eye in the championship game.

Terry Charles Hollerud of Eden Prairie, Minnesota entered eternal life on November 28, 2017. Born July 18,1948 in Austin, Minnesota son of Leonard J. Hollerud and Ruth L. Swain. Preceded in death by his parents Leonard and Ruth; brother Ronald and nephew Jeffrey. He is survived by loving wife, Mary Ellen, Daughter Anne, and Son John (Dulce), grandchildren Britney and J.T.; Sisters: Linda Dupuis, Ruth Ann (Glen) Miles and Mary (Ted) Langer; as well as many loving nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

ROCHESTER — After two straight years of heartbreak, the top-seeded Lyle-Pacelli girls basketball team was able to get back to the top of Section 1A when it beat No. 2 Hayfield (25-5 overall) 75-63 to clinch a trip to the Minnesota Class A state tournament in Mayo Civic Center Friday.

The Athletics used a 14-2 run in the first half to go up 24-9 and Hayfield never got closer than nine points the rest of the way.
