ROCHESTER, Minn.- A taller Lyle High School basketball team made the most of its scoring opportunities Tuesday night before 3,500 fans as it skipped to a 48-42 victory over Spring Valley in the first round of the Region One tournament.
In running its season record to 20-4, Lyle advanced to the finals Friday against either Kasson-Mantorville or Medford, which clash at 8 o'clock tonight.
Wells, Lyle, South St. Paul, Cambridge Win in Regions

The list of contenders of for the 1962 state school basketball championship was reduced to 28 Tuesday night as Lyle, Wells, South St. Paul and Cambridge paraded through first round tests in regional eliminations.
A tall Lyle team, District Two champion and conqueror of Albert Lea, moved into the finals of Region One at Rochester when it toppled Spring Valley of District One 48-42 before 3,500 fans.
Mortensen Resigns As Coach at Lyle

LYLE, MINN.-- Harry Mortenson (sic), Lyle high school basketball coach, has resigned. During his two years at Lyle his basketball teams won 33 games while losing only eight. He plans to attend the University of Minnesota summer session.

Ralph Luchsinger, former Drake university athlete, has been signed as high school football coach and athletic director at Faribault.
Luchsinger played guard on the Drake football team for three years between 1934 and 1936. He will assume his new duties in September.
Basketball coach Harry Mortenson today said he is resigning from Lyle high school to attend summer session classes at the University of Minnesota. In the past two seasons, Mortenson's players won 33 games and lost only eight.
Lyle Wins First Football Game
LYLE, MINN.-- Lyle high school played the first football game in its history here Friday and won, 13 to 6 from Elkton. It was a six-man contest.
St. Augustine Beats
Pillsbury, 23 to 13
Austin, Minn., Jan. 14.- St. Augustine high school defeated Pillsbury Academy of Owatonna, 23 to 13, in a basketball tilt played here Saturday night. Daley was the outstanding player for the winning Austin quintet. In a preliminary match, Lyle high school defeated the St. Augustine B team by a nose-out count of 12 to 11.
ROSE CREEK TRIUMPHS
Rose Creek, Minn., Dec. 10. -- Rose Creek high school boys defeated the Lyle high school basketball team, 20 to 6. The Rose Creek girls also won, by a score of 34 to 30.
The Lyle high school boys have organized an orchestra.

LYLE, Minn., May 9.- The baseball season was opened here Friday with a game between Austin and Lyle. The local team won out in what was a very clean game by a score of 3 to 2. The batteries were: Garrety and Moonan for Austin, and Myhre, Hildebrand and Johnson for Lyle. Saturday the St. Ansgar High school forfeited a game to Lyle High school. The score was a tie, 1 to 1, at the end of the sixth inning, when the Saints left the field.
Lyle, Minn., July 20. -- Lyle high school team defeated the Madison Sluggers here by a score of 13 to 1.
Lyle high school team defeated the Mona Sluggers Saturday by a score of 17 to 13.

Lyle, Minn., Nov. 19- Some one prompted by a motive which is not yet clear, is trying to injure the standing of and make life a burden for Professor Menzo Francis, superintendent of the Lyle Public schools.

Funeral services for Mrs. Dale Bork, 28, of Otranto, who died last Sunday morning (June 15) at Mercy hospital in Mason City following surgery, were held last Wednesday at Deer Creek Lutheran church with the Rev. O. A. Langehough officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Lloyd Oswald Richardson, 93
Lloyd Oswald Richardson, age 93 of Austin, Minnesota, died peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, March 1, 2017.
Born Dec. 21, 1923 to Hans and Anna (Oswald) Richardson in the village of Lyle, Minnesota, he grew up and graduated from high school in 1941 before serving in World War II. He married Esther Nestrel on Dec 31, 1948. She passed away in 2007.

Herbert Ralph Bjork -- Austin
AUSTIN -- The funeral for Herbert Ralph Bjork will be 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin with the Rev. James Mikkelson officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Mona, Iowa.
Mr. Bjork, 83, of 1205 Ninth St. N.W., a retired Hormel Foods Corp. employee, died Monday (May 12, 1997) at Benedictine Hospital in Kingston, N.Y.
William J. Koopal, 77
William J. “Bill” Koopal, 77, of rural Blooming Prairie, Minnesota, died Thursday, Jan. 26, 2017, at his home.
He was born Oct. 17, 1939, in Sheldon, Iowa, the son of Cornelius and Jennie (Buss) Koopal. Bill grew up in Lyle and graduated from Lyle High School. He worked for Alton Wilder Farms, and then for the Freeborn County Co-op.
Thorman Lund Rites Held At Six Mile Grove
Funeral services were held for a former Lyle resident, Thorman O. Lund, 66, at Redeemer Lutheran CHurch at Moorhead, Minnesota Friday, June 8 and also at Six Mile Grove Lutheran church east of Lyle Saturday, June 9 with interment in the church cemetery, with the Rev. Stanley Klemesrud officiating.
Thorman Lund, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ole T. Lund was born in Lyle February 22, 1896. His parents operated a General Merchandise store there until 1918. He attended the Lyle high school and graduated there.

Funeral services for Mrs. Rhoda C. Schroeder, 78, of Mona, who died at St. Olaf hospital, Austin, Minn., September 20, were held September 23 at Mona Lutheran church with the Rev. Gaylord Grant officiating.
Mrs. Ronald Harris Funeral Held At Our Savior's Lutheran
Funeral services for Mrs. Ronald (Doris) Harris, 53, of Lyle, who died May 18 at the Adams Care Center, Adams, Minn., were held May 21 at Our Savior's Lutheran church with the Rev. H. Luecke officiating.
Doris Berneice Paulson, the daughter of John and Berneice (Helgeson) Paulson was born September 6, 1923 in Mower county.
She attended school at Austin and Lyle and graduated from Lyle high school.
July 20, 1946 she married Ronald Harris and lived most of her life in Lyle.
Double Funeral Held Sunday For Harold Fossey's
The entire community was saddened last Thursday, March 9 of the tragic death of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Fossey, prominent Mower county farm couple who lost their lives by smoke inhalation in a fire in their farm home northeast of Lyle.
Double funeral services were held Sunday, March 12 at Our Savior's Lutheran church, Lyle, with the Rev. Merland Johnson officiating. Interment was in the Pleasant Hill cemetery, Mona.
Joseph Albert Follmuth -- St. Ansgar, Iowa
LYLE -- The funeral for Joseph Albert Follmuth will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Lyle, with the Rev. Barbara Finley-Shea officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Mona, Iowa, with military rites by Lyle American Legion Post 105.
Mr. Follmuth, 71, of rural St. Ansgar, Iowa, a longtime area dairy and grain farmer, died Thursday, (July 31, 2003) at Rochester Methodist Hospital.
