ROCHESTER, Minn.- A taller Lyle High School basketball team made the most of its scoring opportunities Tuesday night before 3,500 fans as it skipped to a 48-42 victory over Spring Valley in the first round of the Region One tournament.

In running its season record to 20-4, Lyle advanced to the finals Friday against either Kasson-Mantorville or Medford, which clash at 8 o'clock tonight.

Lyle took only 34 shots and meshed 17 of them for 50 per cent. Included were 11 shots during the first half and seven of them flipped through the hoop.

Spring Valley started strong in working into a 10-7 first period lead and upping that margin to 18-13 going

into the closing minutes of the second stanza.

However, Lyle then scored eight straight points on a field goal by Galen Lehnhardt, another by Tom Nelson and four free throws by Phil Block.

That gave Lyle a 21-18 margin at halftime and it gradually built a 40-28 advantage with 3:41 remaining.

In contrast to Lyle's sparkling shooting, Spring Valley made just 16 or 52 field goal attempts for 30.8 per cent.

Nelson had 13, Block 12 and Albin Slinde 11 for a balanced Lyle offensive. Gary Erickson and Don Hansen with 14 and 12, respectively, were tops for Spring Valley, which closed its season with a 19-4 record.
