Lyle boy who killed teacher is paroled

A boy convicted of the premeditated murder of his eighth-grade math teacher three years ago in Lyle, Minn., has been paroled from the Red Wing juvenile detention center.

The boy, now 17, is living with his parents elsewhere in Minnesota and attending college after earning his high school diploma a year early, a corrections official said Thursday.

The appeal for a 14-year-old boy found delinquent in the shooting death of Lyle teacher Sharon Turnbull has been delayed.

The boy's attorney, Bruce Hanley, said he requested a continuance of the appeal hearing scheduled Tuesday because of a delay in receiving the trail transcript.

He said his brief is now due Oct. 1, after which the state will submit its response.

Turnbull, 33, was shot through a screen as she was sitting in the living room of her home Aug. 6, 1982.

A 14-year-old boy was convicted Monday in the killing of Sharon Turnbull, the Lyle, Minn., school teacher who was shot to death as she sat in her living room watching television.

Olmsted County Judge Harold Krieger, who decided the matter without a jury, said the Lyle boy's confession was the most significant piece of evidence in the case.

The witness was the last to be called by the defense in the murder hearing for a 14-year-old boy accused of killing Turnbull. Final arguments were scheduled this morning at Mower County Courthouse.

A 14-year-old Lyle boy told authorities he shot Sharon Turnbull and then blacked out, according to testimony Thursday in the boy's murder hearing.

The confession, described in court by Mower County Sheriff Wayne Goodnature, was the second obtained by law-enforcement officials on Aug. 12, six days after the teacher was killed.

Investigators did not discover that Sharon Turnbull had been shot to death until 12 hours after neighbors found her body, testimony revealed Monday.

The testimony came during the first day of the first-degree-murder trial of a 14-year-old youth charged with shooting her in her home in Lyle, Minn., in August.

Turnbull, 31, a teacher, was shot while sitting on her living room floor, sewing and watching television.

The trial was to have begun Dec. 13 in Austin juvenile court, but Judge Harold Krieger rescheduled it because of late briefs filed by attorneys. The boy was a pupil of the 33-year-old teacher, who was shot in her house last August.

The boy will stand trial as a juvenile. Juvenile court proceedings normally are closed to the public, but Judge Harold Krieger ruled last week that the news media would be allowed to cover the trial, under certain restrictions.

The juvenile court trial of a Lyle, Minn., boy accused of killing his former teacher will be open to the press, Judge Harold G. Krieger of Rochester said Tuesday.

Krieger said news media representatives must agree not to disclose the boy's name, physical characteristics, relatives, addresses, family history or any other fact that could directly or indirectly identify him or his family. The judge also warned that photographs, tape recordings and sketches are not be made during the trial.

An Arkansas woman, duck hunting on her 80th birthday, shot a mallard duck banded by Lyle, Minn., Future Farmers of America.

Mrs. Beullah Wallace of Gillette, Ark., shot the drake Jan. 8 on her 80th birthday. The duck had been banded by Dennis Helgeson, a Lyle High School junior last summer.

Helgeson received the bird as a day-old mallard in the state FFA banding program. He reared the breed for seven weeks before they were placed in a Mower County slough.

Killed in Action-Army Specialist 5 Roy F. Maas, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul F. Maas, Lyle, Minn., was killed in Vietnam April 18, one day after his 22nd birthday anniversary.

Maas, a 1966 graduate of Lyle High School, entered the service in July 1966 and had been in Vietnam since Dec. 1, 1968.

Army Specialist 5 Roy F. Maas, 22, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Maas, Lyle, Minn., was killed in action in Vietnam Friday, according to the Defense Department.

Maas was a gunner in a tank that was a hit by enemy fire, his parents were informed. He had been in Vietnam since Dec. 1, 1968.

He was graduated from Lyle High School in 1966 and both he and his brother, Lyle, 23, enlisted July 28, 1966. They took their basic training together and also were together at mechanics school in Maryland before being separated.

A 22-year-old Lyle, Minn., soldier was killed in Vietnam Friday, the Defense Department reported Tuesday.

He was identified as Army Specialist 5 Roy F. Maas, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul F. Maas of Lyle.

He had observed his 22nd birthday the day before he was killed in action.

A 1966 graduate of Lyle High School, he entered the service in July of that year and had been in Vietnam since Dec. 1, 1968.
