Death of an Old Settler: Samuel Harris

DEATH OF AN OLD SETTLER.

Samuel Harris, an old resident of Lyle township, died at the residence of his son A. W. Harris at Sibley, Iowa, March 1, 1888, at 9:05 pm., aged 80 years, nine months and 18 days.

Mr. Harris was born near Hamilton, Canada, May 12, 1808, had lived on the old homestead in Lyle for twenty years and until about one year ago when he went to Sibley to reside with his son.

MRS. PAMELIA AULTFATHER.

Pamela N. Foster was born September 27, 1840 at Dennis Creek, Cape May Co., New Jersey. She was the daughter of James and Judith Foster. The father was in the provision business at Dennis Creek for nearly thirty years until he came west in 1848 and located in Sangmon Co., Ill., where they lived for six years, then moved to Minnesota Territory, coming with a team of horses and wagon bringing their household goods with them.

Obituary

Alexander D. Reynolds died at his home in Lyle township north of London Sunday night about 10 o'clock after a week's illness of pneumonia. Though in feeble health for some time he was able to attend the funeral of his sister-in-law, Mrs. Perry Reynolds some two weeks ago.

Mr. Reynolds was born in Argyle, May 1, 1851, but for the past 34 years has lived in Mower county. He leaves beside his wife two brothers and two sisters, Mrs. Ada Drummond and Mrs. Marie Watkins.

We copy the following obituary of an old and respected citizen of this county, from the Transcript.

"At his home in Cedar City, Feb. 28, 1903, of cancer, Welcome Osborn, aged 78 years. He has been in failing health for over two years, and for much of the time has suffered intensely and death came as a sweet relief.

He was born near Montreal, Canada, Jan. 11, 1825, being the oldest son of Isaac and Sarah Osborn. Early left without a father's care, he learned self-dependence and knew from boyhood what hard and constant toil was.

J. A. Carter died

It is with regret that we announce the death on March 12, of Mr. J. A. Carter, at the residence of his son D. L. Carter, three miles north of Lyle, aged 82 years. The remains were interred last Saturday in the Cedar City cemetery, Rev.'s Briggs of Austin and Moore of Lyle being the officiating clergymen. He leaves eleven children and a host of friends to mourn his untimely departure.

Rebecca Welch obituary

WELCH.

At the home of her daughter, Friday evening, March 30th, of old age, Mrs. Rebecca Welch, aged 84 years last July. She has lived here for many years and was well known among the older settlers. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the home of her daughter, Mrs. F. Musser, Rev. F. A. Cone officiating. Interment at Cedar City.

Whittechur Watkins obituary

WHITTECHUR WATKINS.

Whit Watkins, aged 65 years, died suddenly Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 4, 1909, at his farm west of the Cedar City cemetery. He had gone down for the day to see the harvest and was out in the field and had shocked a little grain. As he picked up a bundle of grain to set it up he fell over and died without warning, of apoplexy. His son Harvey was cutting on the harvester at the time and as soon as possible came to the aid of his father but life was extinct.

WATKINS.

At her home on Park avenue, early Friday morning, Oct. 6, 1905, of paralysis, Mrs. Abram Watkins, aged nearly 62 years. She was the daughter of John A. Carter.

Phebe Carter was born in Milton, Quebec, Jan. 29, 1844. Her folks moved to Burlington, Wis., when she was about 12 years old. In 1857, she came with her folks to Cedar City in this county. She was married April 11, 1867, to Mr. Watkins, Rev. A. Morse officiating. The husband survives. They settled on their farm at Cedar City an lived there for over thirty years, moving in to Austin about seven years ago.

An Old Settler Gone.

Mr. John Watkins, Sen., one of the oldest settlers in Mower county, died Sunday morning. Mr. Watkins was 83 years of age and was born in Wales. On his arrival in this country, Mr. Watkins first settled in Wisconsin. From there he came to Minnesota in 1856, since which time he has been a resident of our county. The funeral is held from the Cedar City school house this morning, Rev. Stanley officiating. We will give full particulars of his death next week.

JOHN R. WATKINS.

John Richard Watkins, aged nearly 77 years, died at his home in Cedar City Thursday, January 2, 1913, of injuries received from a horse. On the evening of Dec. 28, while doing his chores at his barn he was thrown down and trampled upon by a colt and was severely injured about the stomach. He remained conscious almost to the end.

He was born in Wales, Feb. 16, 1836. At the age of ten years he came with his parents to Burlington, Wis. In 1856 they came to Cedar City in this county and lived with his folks until the war.
