CHAPTER II.

Before Austin had a name or a location, quite a settlement had sprung up in Nevada in the neighborhood of Six Mile Grove. This was on the old West Union road and the bulk of emigrants that came into the state from the south travelled this road and passed by the Nevada settlement.

Another City: Lyle

ANOTHER CITY. -- The Milwaukee & St. Paul Railway Company are surveying off 40 acres of land at the state line into town lots. Mr. E. B. Crane, of this place, is doing the work. The new city is to be named "Lyle," after the township. It is only one mile from the new town of Mona, Iowa, on the Illinois Central Railway.

Judge Lyle gave us a call

-- Judge Lyle gave us a friendly call yesterday. The Judge is one of the pioneers of Mower county. He was a member of the Constitutional Convention, and representative from Mower in the 1st session of the Minnesota Legislature. He has also been twice or three times elected to the position of Probate Judge for this county, resigning some two years ago in favor of Ormanzo Allen, Esq.

Lyle will celebrate its sesquicentennial in 2020, and Lyle native Mitch Helle has been working on an updated community history book for the occasion.

He is now one step closer to his goal, thanks to the Worth County (Iowa) Development Authority, which awarded Helle a grant for $6,405.84 Wednesday night. The money will be used to help digitize copies of the Lyle Tribune, which published from the 1890s to the 1950s.

Cobb's brass band back in the late 1800's has Mona been serenaded with such talented musicians as they were at Mona Centennial celebration Sunday, October 12 when the American Legion Post 278 Osage Drum & Bugle Corp made a surprise volunteer visit to appear on the program.

LYLE, Minn.- Numerous cemeteries dating back a century or more are run down and uncared for, but Woodbury Cemetery along Highway 105 west of Lyle on the Iowa-Minnesota border is 111 years old and is one of the best kept in North Iowa and Southern Minnesota.

The Six Mile Grove Lutheran Church, the First Norwegian Church Founded in Mower County, Celebrates Its Fiftieth Anniversary-An Interesting History.

The Six Mile Grove Norwegian Lutheran church celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of its organization with fitting exercises on Sunday, Nov. 21. Although the roads were rough and welnigh impassable and the weather was cold, the church building was crowded. The program was all in Norwegian. The auditorium was beautifully decorated in gilt and green with appropriate mottoes.

Rev. Alanson Beach, father of John Beach whose portrait heads this article, was born in the town of Rensselaer, Albany county, N. Y., on the 25th of October, 1808. His younger days were spent at school and on the farm. After finishing his studies, he taught winters and farmed the remainder of the year.

Dual projects — one written and one oral — promise to lend life to Lyle history.

Mitchell Helle, a Lyle native, worked with John Haymond of the Mower County Historical Society to apply for a Minnesota Legacy Grant in order to film and preserve oral histories of longtime residents. The grant is funded through the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund and was formally granted to the Mower County Historical Society.
