Mrs. Mate F. Sargent

Mrs. M. F. Sargent of Nevada township, passed away at 12:50, the noon hour on Decoration Day in a hospital in St. Paul. Mrs. Sargent was sick with gall stones and ten days previous to her demise she was taken to St. Paul for treatment and an operation. She was always rugged and hearty and her sudden passing away was a great shock to the many friends in this vicinity where she had always lived.

Mary Alice Smith, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Smith was born on a farm near Austin March 12, 1864. She attended the rural school just east of Austin and when seventeen years of age, February 15, 1881, she was married to Mate Sargent. She was a Mower County girl, spending all her life here. She was a kind mother and neighbor, who worked hard for a large family and lent a hand to her friends when in need.

Beside the husband she leaves several children, Mahlon of St. Paul, Mrs. Alice Searls of Nevada, Dan of Austin, Mark of Montana, Mrs. Amy Downey of Nevada, Charles and Alta both living at home. She also leaves three brothers, James of Clear River, Frank and Elihu of Austin, also three sisters, Mrs. Margaret Manchester of Minneapolis, Mrs. Nina Vipond of Grand Rapids, Mrs. Nellie Bassett of Dundas.

The body was brought to the home for funeral services which were conducted Friday by Rev. E. Wade of the Christian church from the home. Sympathy is extended to the family in the loss of a good wife and mother.
