Eugene M. Hofland -- St. Ansgar, Iowa

ST. ANSGAR, Iowa -- The funeral for Eugene M. Hofland will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in Schroeder &; Sites Funeral Home in St. Ansgar, Iowa, with the Rev. Lance Kittleson officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Mona, Iowa. Mr. Hofland, 93, of St. Ansgar, died Monday (Sept. 19, 2005) at the Good Samaritan Center in St. Ansgar.

Eugene Marvin Hofland was born Jan. 28, 1912, in Union Township, Mitchell County, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed in the Six Mile Grove Lutheran Church. He lived with his widowed brother, Alfred, on the home farm until 1964, and then they moved to their present home north of Toeterville, Iowa. He was inducted into the Army during World War II on March 22, 1941, and received the Bronze Star and Purple Heart for wounds received in Casino, Italy, and in the Middle East. He was a heavy-mortar crewman, served in Company D of the 29th Army Infantry Battalion and was discharged Dec. 5, 1944. He was employed by the Geo. A. Hormel Co., from September 1934 to September 1974, and was known for his garden and apples.

There are no immediate survivors. He is survived by two nieces and a nephew.

He was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

Visitation will be an hour before the service Wednesday at the funeral home.
