AUSTIN -- An Austin man arrested for the vandalism of Lyle Public School appears to have had a long history of chemical abuse, Mower County Sheriff Wayne Goodnature said.

That abuse might have been a contributing factor to his alleged damage to the school, Goodnature said.

The 18-year-old man, who was a juvenile at the time of the vandalism Oct. 1, was arrested in connection with thefts at two Austin stores a few days later. He is being charged through the juvenile justice system. Two men arrested in connection with the Austin break-ins were not charged with the Lyle vandalism.

The county is still working on a number of leads that might bring further arrests in the Lyle vandalism, Goodnature said.
