Melvin P. ‘Red’ Hansen, 90

Melvin P. “Red” Hansen, 90, of Austin, Minnesota, died Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2017. at The Cedars of Austin.

He was born Oct. 4, 1926, on the family farm in Nevada Township, Mower County, Minnesota, the son of Fay and Elda (Schloo) Hansen. Melvin attended country school near his home. He farmed in Mower County for his entire life, drove a gravel truck, and hauled cattle with his own rig. On March 21, 1948, Melvin married Lois “Jean” Spurgeon in Austin. The couple lived on the family farm and raised two sons and three daughters. Jean passed away June 14, 1993. In 1994, Melvin moved into Lyle, Minnesota, where he lived until moving to The Cedars in the fall of 2016. He loved to play cards and do puzzles. His family and friends will miss him dearly.

Melvin is survived by his sons Loren (Lorraine) Hansen of The Villages, Florida, and Kevin (Linda Winkels) Hansen of rural Austin; his daughters, Barb Wilder (Scott Robertson), Renae Smith (Brad Prasil), and Denise (Larry) Kollasch, all of Rochester, Minnesota; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; brother-in-law Edward Walker of McGregor, Minnesota; and special friend, Diane Trytten of Lyle. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lois; and his sister, Margaret Walker.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, March 6, 2017, at the Worlein Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Lydia Mittag officiating. Visitation will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, March 5, at Worlein Funeral Home, and one hour prior to the service on Monday. Interment will be in Rose Creek Enterprise Cemetery. The family requests that attendees wear plaid and blue jeans in Red’s honor. Worlein Funeral Home of Austin is assisting the family with arrangements.
