Henry F. Deming

One of the oldest residents of this county, Henry F. Deming, died Friday morning at 7 o'clock at his home a mile south of the Fair grounds. His life was finished, he passed his 91st year on December 25. He had a slight cold which developed into grip and the end came Friday. He was an honest citizen, a loved and respected neighbor.

Henry F. Deming was born in Jefferson county, N. Y., December 25, 1825. His father was a Presbyterian minister. Henry lived at home until the age of fourteen when he began earning his living by working on a farm; In 1853 he was married to Mary Bennett, a native of Franklin county, N. Y. Soon after their marriage they moved to Lowell, Mass., where they lived for three years and then removed to Green Bay, Wis.

In 1863 they came to Mower County and took a homestead on the west half of the northwest quarter of section 6. Mr. Deming improved this land, and erected good farm buildings and remained there for over twenty years, when he sold the place and removed to Lansing township near the city of Austin, For the last few years he has lived on a small truck farm near Turtle Creek.

Mr. Deming has always been held in the highest esteem by all who knew him. In the fall of 1875 he was elected representative on the Republican ticket and served one term in our State legislature. He was always a staunch Republican and has held the office of supervisor and chairman of the board of Nevada township where his farm was located. He was a member of the Presbyterian church during the early years of his life and for some time after coming to Minnesota was associated with the Congregational church of this city.

Mrs. Deming died April 14, 1909. Four children survive to mourn the loss of a good father, Charles Deming of Warwick, N. J., Jessie Deming who has always made a home for her father, Eva Deming Clift of Moscow, and Gay Deming Buck living south of our city.

The funeral was held at 1:30 Sunday afternoon from the home.
