Richard E. Harrison, 76

Richard "Dick" Ellsworth Harrison, 76, died Saturday, Sept. 28 at the Veteran's Hospital in Minneapolis.

He was born in LaCrosse, Wis. on May 8, 1926, the oldest of six children.

He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1944 when he was 17 years old. He was a machine gunner and part of the 28th regiment 5th division that landed on Mount Surabachi in Iwo Jima. He was injured on March 1 after nine days of fighting, witnessing both historic flag raisings. He was transferred to Guam and later flown to AIEA Hospital in Hawaii, then to the Great Lakes, Ill. hospital. He was discharged in 1946.

In 1947, he married Ethel Mary Young. They had two sons, Steve and Gary. He worked for the 7-Up Bottling Company as a sales manager, insurance sales and finally as a semi-truck driver, retiring in 1973. He was a life-time member of the American Legion, Disabled Vets and the VFW. He enjoyed doing stained glass work.

Survivors include his wife, Ethel; two sons, Steve (Diane) of Austin and Gary (Marg) of Lyle; two brothers, Mike Courtier of Kent, Wash. and Jack McDonald of Winona; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.

Memorial services are scheduled for Oct. 6 for a private family service. His body will be cremated and buried in Cedar City Cemetery. The family prefers memorials to the Lyle Legion or Cedar City Cemetery in lieu of flowers.
