OBITUARY

Death always comes as a shock to friends and loved ones, no matter who or when it calls. This was particularly true in the case of Verna Hofland, whose death came in the flower of young womanhood, when least expected, and the family have the heartfelt sympathy of the community in this time of deep sorrow.

Verna Irene Hofland was born Jan 21, 1907 in Otranto Township, Mitchell County Iowa, and died of heart trouble at Winona, Minn. on Dec 31, 1930 at the age of 23 years, 11 months and 10 days. She was baptized in the Mona church and confirmed in the Lyle church. She attended public school in Lyle, and graduated from the Lyle High school in 1926. She then attended the Hamilton Business College in Mason City, Iowa, from which she also graduated. She then served as bookkeeper at the Watkins Co in Winona, Minn. for a year, and later worked for about a year at Austin. The past year she spent at home, caring for her parents.

She leaves to mourn her sudden death, her father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Iver Hofland, her brother, Jewett Hofland of Vida, Mont, Millie Groth of Enderlin, N. D., Nellie Nelson of Vida, Mont; Ibert Hofland, Edna Volstad and Lylah Emerson, all of Lyle, Minn. A brother, Elmer Hofland, preceded her in death, 12 years ago passing away in France, Dec. 2, 1918, and buried in Lyle in 1920. A host of relatives and friends also grieve her sudden and untimely departure from our midst. She was loved and admired by all who knew her. Her gentle and kindly disposition and sterling qualities endeared her to all. She will be greatly missed by her loved ones, unto whom she was very precious.

A precious one from us has gone
A voice we loved is stilled.
A place is vacant in our house
Which never can be filled.
God in His wisdom has recalled
The boon His love had given,
And though the body slumbers here,
The soul is safe in Heaven.
