J. L. (Roy) Hobkirk, 76, veteran Lyle barber died at St. Olaf hospital in Austin, Thursday, July 27, following a paralytic stroke, having been ill only seriously for a period of ten days. He learned the barber trade when a very young man and retired in 1958 after 59 years having spent 50 years in Lyle. He had been in North and South Dakota, Washington and Minnesota, and also barbered in Osage, Stacyville and St. Ansgar before he settled in Lyle.
Funeral services were held Sunday, August 2 at Worlein funeral home at Austin, with interment in Pleasant Hill cemetery with the Rev. Earl Brown, pastor of First Baptist church at Austin officiating.
Joseph LeRoy Hobkirk was born on a farm near Mitchell, Iowa May 17, 1883 to Mr. and Mrs. R. S. (Louisa Campbell) Hobkirk. He attended school at Mitchell and also later the Red Star school north of Lyle.
He was married to Tomina O. Thompson, October 14, 1908 at Osage. He is survived by his only son, Robert W. of Dallas, Texas and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife who died in January of this year. Also two brothers, Bert and Henry and two sisters, Sadie and (Jennie) Mrs. Charles [illegible:Wyborney?].
