Obituary

Henry Gustav Dahl, born in Orfordville, Wisc., October 1, 1871, passed away at St. Olaf hospital in Austin, Nov. 13, 1956 after a brief illness. Mr. Dahl was 85 years of age at the time of his death which terminated 64 years of active business with all but 11 years of which were spent in the hardware and implement line.

Henry Dahl was the son of Hans and Serianna Dahl. He came with his parents to Mitchell County, Iowa, when he was three years old. As a very young man he sold notions door to door to earn money to attend the St. Ansgar Seminary, where he took the business course to prepare himself for his active business career.

On Oct. 12, 1898, he was united in marriage to Emma Amanda Volstad. They made their home in Lyle, where he was employed in the local drug store. To this union were born five sons, Lloyd, Fred, Glenn, James and Paul and two daughters, Genevieve and Evangeline.

In 1901, he went into hardware business with John Schumacher and was active in the business with his on, Lloyd and grandson, Glenn, until the time of his brief illness and death. Mr. Dahl was honored by the Minnesota Implement Dealers Assn., on his golden Anniversary in business and by the Estwing Manufacturing Co. on his 55th anniversary.

He was a beloved and outstanding citizen of the community, a friend long to be remembered on Main Street. For many years he was a member of the school board, the local fire department, the community band, and the Dahl quartette. Although vitally interested in every civic affair, his love and devotion to his Lord took preminence in his life. Music was frequently a means of expressing this devotion through the ministry of his family orchestra and vocal combinations. This ministry has been widely known through the years and was a great source of satisfaction to him and nearest to his heart.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, James, three other sons, Fred, Glenn and Paul and his wife, Emma. He will be deeply missed by his son, Lloyd, two daughters, Mrs. Paul Ross, Alberta, Canada, and Mrs. Sterling Krause, Lyle; three brothers, Arthur Dahl and I. F. Dahl, Austin and T. J. Dahl, Lyle; a sister, Mrs. N. E. Fedson, Austin, eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends to whom he was affectionately endeared.

Funeral services were held at the home at 11:30 a. m. and at the Lutheran Church at 2 p. m., the Rev. Sanford Stenson and Rev. Carl Brown officiating. Interment was in Pleasant Hill cemetery, Lyle, with the Worlein Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Friends and relatives from Minneapolis, Albert Lea, Mason City, St. Ansgar, Blooming Prairie, Austin, Rose Creek and Osage attended.
