Walter Sherman Funeral Held January 27

Funeral services for Walter H. Sherman, 68, who died following a heart attack Sunday, January 24 at the Mitchell County Memorial hospital, Osage, were held Wednesday, January 27 at the Worlein Mortuary in Austin at 3 p. m. with the Rev. M. H. Averbeck, pastor of the Bethel Alliance church in Lyle officiating.

Music was furnished by the Dahl Quartet, accompanied by Delbert Saman, organist. Burial was in Woodbury cemetery in the family plot. Casket bearers were members of Post 105 of the Lyle American Legion, with military escort also by members of Post 105.

Mr. Sherman died just seven weeks after the sudden death of his twin brother, Willis.

Walter Henry Sherman was born October 15, 1896 in Lyle, the son of Jewett Henry and Mary Ellen Sherman. He was reared in Lyle, and attended the Lyle public schools. He was employed at various jobs until he entered the Armed Services in World War I October 22, 1918. He served in the Army until January of 1919 when he received his honorable discharge at Camp Dodge, Iowa.

He was married to Hazel V. Riehm October 5, 1921. They had resided in Lyle since their marriage. Mr. Sherman worked at the Chevrolet plant at Flint, Mich, for a short time. He returned to Lyle and was employed at the Hormel packing plant in Austin, retiring from that employment after 30 years of service. He became ill in 1962, and after undergoing two surgical operations, developed a heart condition from which he never recovered.

Mr. Sherman was a member of the American Legion Post 105 of Lyle, and was for many years a member of the Lyle Fire department. He attended the Bethel Alliance church.

Survivors include his wife, Hazel; two brothers, Edward B. and Stanton L. Sherman of Wibaux, Mont.; also numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Relatives attending the funeral from out of town were Stanton L. Sherman and Beaman L. Sherman of Wibaux, Mont., and others from Carpenter, Des Moines, Jewell, Mason City, Osage, Rockford, Iowa and the surrounding area.
