OBITUARY, PETER JOHNSON

Peter Johnson slept peacefully away at 11:50, Monday, Jan. 18, at the home of his son, Palmer, four miles northwest of Lyle at the age of 88 years, seven months and eleven days. He had been in fairly good health until nine days before his death when he suffered a stroke.

He was the son of Md. and Mrs. John Ellingson and was born near Bergen, Norway on June 7, 1848, where he grew to manhood. His occupation there was a sailor on fishing vessels on the North Sea.

At the age of 25 he left his native land, November 20, 1873, and arrived at Austin, December 13. He then went to Adams where he worked as a farmhand around Adams and Le Roy.

He was united in marriage to Olena Thomson, December 24, 1879 in St. Ansgar, Iowa. They made their home near St. Ansgar for 14 years when they purchased a farm northwest of Lyle on which they lived until 17 years ago. They then moved to Austin where they lived until the past year and a half when they moved back to the home farm.

To this union ten children were born: Mrs. Josephine Olson, Yorkton, Sask., Canada; Alfred T. of Rose Creek; Ben J. of Winona; Mrs. Selma Dufty of Austin; Palmer O. and Mrs. Mae Weber of Lyle and Lloyd O, Mrs. Irene Remker of Austin; Eva L. who died ten years ago and Emma, who died in infancy. Mrs. Johnson preceded him in death on March 16, 1936.

He also leaves 27 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Mr. Johnson was an industrious and hard working man. He was a life member of the Lutheran church.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan. 21 at 1:15 from the Jordan Mortuary, and at 2:00 o'clock at the Lutheran church at Lyle, Rev. O. M. Langehough officiating. Interment at Pleasant Hill Cemetery at Mona, Iowa.
