Obituary.

Died, at her home in Carpenter, Iowa, Monday afternoon, July 20, 1896, of heart trouble, Mrs. Miranda B. West, relict of Lewis West, aged 76 years. Her maiden name was Hasbrooks.

Deceased was born in Addison, Vermont, November 29, 1819. Her parents owned a farm on the banks of Lake Champlain, her father being a stone mason and contractor. When she was but 11 years old her father died and she with her mother went to live with her mother's father, Wm. H. Pickett, a prominent citizen of Vermont, by whom she brought up. When she was about 13 years old, they moved to Chautauqua county, New York. Here she was married to Lewis West, September 24, 1837, and settled on a farm near grandfather Pickett's. About 1850, Mr. and Mrs. West and their four children moved to Buffalo, N. Y., and lived there three or four years. In the summer of 1854 they came west, and took a claim at Old Otranto, being among the earliest settlers of Mitchell county. They erected a log house at first, subsequently putting up a frame residence. They lived on their farm until about 20 years ago when they moved to Carpenter. Here the husband died June 9, 1886, and the widow continued her home there until her decease.

Her health was reasonably good until last November when she was injured by a fall and she has been very low at different times since. Last week she had a relapse and was worse, but seemed better Sunday and Monday forenoon. At 1:20 Monday afternoon, she sank suddenly away without a pain or sigh.

Deceased was a firm believer in the Christian religion. She was baptized on a personal profession of faith many years ago at Otranto by Rev. John Hurd, a Disciple minister, and her purpose and desire were always to encourage religious influences and to let her light shine consistently. Her last days were bright with a hope of celestial felicity and she died triumphant in the faith.

The four children, all born in Chautauqua Co., N. Y., survive. They were Warren C. West, of Eldora, Iowa; Clark S. West, of Yankton, S. D.; Mrs. Francelia L. Belden, of Austin, Minn., and Henry P. West, of St. Ansgar, Iowa.

Funeral services were held at the residence this (Wednesday) afternoon, conducted by Rev. Martin, pastor of Disciple church at Mason City, and her remains were laid to rest beside her husband in the cemetery at Carpenter.

Deceased was well known among the old settlers at the state line and had many acquaintances in this city, all of whom will be saddened to hear of her departure. We extend personal sympathy to afflicted relatives and friends.
