Gem Restaurant
1906-10-19 - Edwin Frank and David Erickson have purchased the Miller restaurant and will be ready to serve meals and lunches at all hours, commencing Saturday. This popular rendevous will be known as the "Gem" and the proprietors will endeavor to make it all the name implies. We wish them success.
1909-05-14 - Starr's Candy, Fresh and Pure at the Gem Restaurant. Made in a clean place, by clean Candy Makers, out of Clean Material.
1912-05-31 - Another room is being added to the Gem Restaurant, on the east. It will be used for a kitchen.
1913-09-19 - Chas E. Fields, whom we mentioned in last week's issue as having purchased the Gem Restaurant business from D. E. Erickson, took charge last Friday evening. Mr. Fields has been running an engine for the Milwaukee railroad for many years, but was obliged to give up his work on account of his health. Mrs. Fields has had considerable experience in hotel business and will assist in the restaurant. They have secured living rooms over the H. W. Hill store.
1913-12-26 - The Gem Restaurant will serve supper for the Dance, New Years Night. A specially prepared supper will be served...Menu: cold sliced roast pork, tea biscuit and butter, sweet pickles, sour pickles, cheese, fruit, potato salad, nut, cocoanut and chocolate cake, tea, coffee, milk. 1915-02-05 - Again we see D. E. Erickson wearing the white apron as chef behind the counter in the Gem Restaurant. It was just 17 months ago when Dave sold the restaurant business to Chas. Fields and since that time has been like a fish out of water. The deal was closed Saturdays and the change was made Sunday. The Fields family will move back to Mason City and Mr. Fields will go back at his run on the railroad.

1919-01-03 - Will Barclay has moved into the Anderson building on Main Street, from the Commercial Hotel. L. E. Larson, proprietor of the Gem restaurant, has rented the hotel and will run a cafeteria in connection.
1919-01-24 - The Gem Restaurant is now located in the Commercial Hotel, 1 door north of the Old stand. We appreciate the liberal patronage in the past and ask for continuance of the same in the future. We shall do our best to serve you. - L. E. Larson
1919-06-06 - "To Open Up Restaurant" - Carl Springer has rented the old Gem restaurant building on Main street and has been busy the past week getting ready to open up a first-class eating place. Meals and short orders will be served and a full line of tobaccos and candy will be carried in stock. Mr. Springer says he hopes to be ready for business in a few days.
1920-01-02 - Mrs. Rheim and Griggs have purchased the Gem Restaurant from Carl Springer

1921-09-16 - Carl Springer and George Jorgenson purchased the Gem Restaurant business last week from R. W. Volstad who has been operating the place since last spring.
1922-03-03 - "Business Changes" - Carl Springer sold the Gem Restaurant business, Wednesday, to L. M. Anderson of Waterville, Ia., and Clarence Thompson of Waukon, Ia. The young men took charge of the business Mar. 1.

1923-03-02 - H. V. Holck, the Gem restaurant proprietor, has moved into the old Cobb house.
1923-05-04 - Walter Olson is working at the Gem Restaurant. Scott Jones who worked there for some time has gone to his home at Waukon, Ia.
1924-06-06 - H. V. Holck who has conducted the Gem restaurant a little more than a year has sold his interests Tuesday to Mr. and Mrs. Ross Riehms who will continue the business at the old stand.
1925-03-20 - "New Proprietor at the Gem Restaurant" - The Gem Restaurant which has been managed by Ross Riehm, was sold last Saturday to E. E. Anderson, who took charge Monday morning. ...For 13 years he has served as clerk at the John Hanson general store... Emil and work are so closely related that they are synonymous terms...
1928-03-16 - Miss Mary Arneson, the efficient cook at the Gem Restaurant, has been on the sick list the past week. Mrs. Rena Springer is Chef during her absence.
1929-04-05 - Henry Knoble of Austin, who operated the Austin Cafe for many years, has purchased the Gem Restaurant in Lyle. Mis Mary Arneson, who has had charge for some time, will continue until the new proprietor gets located here, which he hopes to do in a few days.
